There are already a lot of different ways to create clutter (for instance AutoBrowse, TrackMeNot and many others). An estimate was made by a German activist network known as “AK Vorrat”, using software that views random websites and runs in the background. If only 1,000 people use this tool, as much as 1.4 terabytes of data would be generated per month. Take note, we are talking about only 1,000 users! Those quantities would more than just attract attention, – with the proviso the software’s effects don´t get filtered. Because of that, this method is being hotly debated amongst netizens and activists.
To develop the technology for tools that are user friendly, unfilterable and also highly effective remains a challenge. In addition, the tools not only have to be engineered, but also have to be acccessible to a broad audience. In the long run we want to achieve both goals.
Step 1: mobilization of the mainstream
Initially we will use the method of “adding random noise” pretty much in a manual way. With our campaings we will bring the subject into the mainstream and enable the people to act. With common tech tools and with just a few clicks even amatuers can take part. Instead of resigning oneself to the private sphere we can all participate in a worldwide movement and see how many people like us are out there. Additionally we’ll provide concise knowledge and setup ad-hoc-campaings when new revelations and leaks are released.
With our worldwide online-flashmob we are leaving visible signs and causing an impact: Some of our actions will be rather symbolic, others in contrast will hide our profiles and leave misleading footprints or illusive tracks inside the data stream. With this first step however, we won’t force the intelligence agencies to wave the white flag.
Step 2: crowdfunding and deployment of technology
That is what we want to achieve in the second phase, when we’ll take on the challenge of engineering solutions that are built to vastly increase the random noise and fog our profiles. For the necessary budget we will create a crowdfunding campaign and we will found an officially registered, nonprofit, public benefit organization which will give prominence to our action.
